    The Executive Committee of the European Society for Photobiology (ESP), the Executive Board of the International Union of Photobiology (IUPB), and the Congress Organizing Committee, cordially invite you to attend the World Congress on Light and Life (17th Congress of the International Union of Photobiology and 18th Congress of the European Society for Photobiology), which will be held in Barcelona (Spain) from the 25th to the 30th August 2019.

    This first global congress on light and life will provide a comprehensive international forum for the dissemination of the most recent research and technological developments in the photobiological sciences and in photomedicine, and it will offer a unique opportunity for presentation of the latest breakthroughs, exchange of new ideas, and for establishing global and far-reaching collaborations.

    The broadest possible coverage of the photobiological sciences will be achieved through 60 symposia featuring 540 presentations, 5 plenary and 18 keynote lectures, complemented by poster sessions and applied photobiology sessions. An unprecedented number of speaking opportunities will enable a large fraction of the delegates to disseminate and discuss their research thereby increasing its impact. In addition, there will be the opportunity to contribute and participate in interactive poster sessions. There will be fellowships available to encourage the active participation of young scientists in the congress program.

    Barcelona is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, a highly dynamic south-European and Mediterranean city with a unique mix of contemporary and historic architecture. Barcelona is a creative, modern and cosmopolitan city that offers a vast array of attractions such as the legacy of famous architect Antoni Gaudí, a large number of fine restaurants, 5 km of beaches, a medieval city center – the gothic quarter – the famous Ramblas avenue where you go to see and be seen…A city you will love.

    The weather in late August is pleasantly warm, with an average temperature of 24 ºC. The temperature rarely goes above 30 ºC and the probability of rain is low.

    The congress venue is the hotel Crowne Plaza Fira Center. It is very conveniently located within walking distance of the city center and several museums and tourist attractions. It can be easily reached from the airport using the “Aerobus” and is also a few minutes away from the main Railway station. The Crowne Plaza has excellent facilities that ensure a smooth running of the congress.

    "Laser Florence 2019 is a Congress of Laser Medicine reached the thirtieth edition, where expert of the whole world, physicians, surgeons,physical therapists, physics, engineers, biologists, meet together with young researchers, to compare and to expose the results of their searches, together with their experience, in order to transmit some applicable innovative data in the clinical practice. The list of the discoveries introduced in the others 29 editions of this congress would be too much long.

    This year our appointment coincides with the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo Da Vinci. The employment of lasers in medicine is a mystery, above all for the traditional medicine, that keeps on considering only the science mathematical-statistic, measurable, repeatable and reproducible, and it systematically ignores the observational-analytical part, and the quantum physical applied to biology.
    Like the past years we will try to unit all the science’s points of view in an only global vision, going, as Leonardo wanted, toward a new humanism and the rebirth of the true science, that englobes the traditional part, but enriches it with a dynamic vision of the relationships among the endogenous and exogenous energies. Of this global vision, the bright rays, coherent and not, are an integral part. The principal living pioneers of the sector will be present together with enthusiastic young people that want deepening their knowledges.
    The Congress will be sponsored by the greatest international and national Institutions, and inserted in the program of continuous medical education of the different countries, included the Italy one, Europe and North-America.
    The best relationships and poster will be winners, the abstracts and the proceedings will be published by accredited magazines.
    I hope to meet you in Florence, to live together another beautiful constructive experience."

    The purpose of the ESP Photobiology Schools is to provide an introductory overview of all main aspects of photobiology, presented by experts in each area. The intention is to cover the basic principles of photobiology and photochemistry of biomolecules as well as applications of such knowledge in understanding effects of climatic changes, influence of light on biological systems, applications of light in medicine and related purposes.
    The Schools include basic lectures in each field that should be attended by all participants as well as optional special lectures in the same fields. The students have the opportunity to present their results at a poster session.
    The course may act as a foundation for further research in the photobiological sciences. The attendants may be MSc- and PhD-students as well as others who would be interested in an overview of the photobiological sciences. However, the course is primarily designed for PhD students. After completion of the course an attendance certificate is provided to all the students. In addition, an optional short final test is offered at the end of the course and an exam certificate is provided after evaluation of the exam results. Passing the exam will entitle students to apply for the ESP supplement to the Ph.D. Degree.
    Students are encouraged to submit an abstract of their research to be presented as a poster during the School. The posters will be evaluated by the lecturers and the School attendee with the best poster will be awarded a travel fellowship to present the poster at the next ESP Congress.

    The school will cover the following areas:

    • Photophysics and photochemistry;
    • Biophotonics - Light dosimetry in biological tissues;
    • UV (from cells to skin tissue, DNA damage, Vit. D effects);
    • Photomedicine;
    • PDT and fluorescence diagnosis;
    • Photodermatology;
    • Photosynthesis;
    • Environmental photobiology;
    • Photosensory biology.
